The Scharer Chiropractic Clinic in Owen has been a fixture of the Owen-Withee community for more than half a century. In that time, thousands of people from the surrounding area and the surrounding states have benefited from the chiropractic care they have received.
Dr. Galen R. Scharer Sr. graduated in October 1948 from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He decided to open his practice in the summer of 1949 in Owen, located in the Hiway Hotel. He practiced there as well as in a couple of other buildings in downtown Owen before the need for a larger office became eminent. In 1960 it became time to expand, and he built the building that is the Scharer Chiropractic Clinic today.
Then, in the summer of 1977, Dr. Galen R. Scharer II graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic and became a partner with his father at the clinic. Both doctors worked together until 1985, when Dr. Scharer II bought out his father's half of the business and Dr. Scharer Sr. became semi-retired. Dr. Scharer Sr. continued seeing patients at the clinic until he retired in 1992 after 44 years of practice.
Since that time, a third generation has joined the clinic. Dr. Justin G. Scharer graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in the spring of 2004 and has been working at the clinic since.
